Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I wear?
A: There is surely no dress code at St. John. God will be happy to see you, no matter what
you’re wearing.
Q: Are kids welcome?
A: Of course! Not only are children welcome to attend church, but we also offer Sunday
school for all ages at 10:15. If you have a youngster aged five or younger, you may also may feel free to leave him or her in our fully staffed nursery that is available during both Sunday services.
Q: Will I have to introduce myself?
A: When you arrive, you will be greeted warmly, and you are free to introduce yourself or
not. You will not be asked to stand or say your name. We do ask that you complete the communication card that everyone fills out during the service so that we can thank you for joining us. In between services, we invite you to join us for coffee hour, but if you’d rather not, that’s okay, too. Above all, we want you to feel at home.
Q: If I include my email and/or address on the communication card, will I be put on some
regular mailing list?
A: Absolutely not! You can expect a follow up contact or two, but we will not bombard you
with mail or email.
Q: What happens at a typical worship service?
A: The typical St. John worship service includes readings, music, a message from one of our
pastors, and Holy Communion.
Q: How will I know when to stand or sit?
A: In addition to the bulletin that outlines our service, we also project our entire service on
the wall. Our pastors also invite you to sit and stand at the appropriate times.
Q: Will I be expected to make the sign of the cross during the service?
A: Some of our members choose to make the sign of the cross, but it is up to the individual’s
preference.
Q: Will I have to sing?
A: Music is an important part of our worship at St. John, and the words to the hymns are
projected on the wall and printed in the hymnals in the pews. You are invited to join in when you feel comfortable.
Q: Do I have to be Lutheran to take communion?
A: At St. John, we invite all baptized Christians who believe in the real presence of Christ to
join us at the Lord’s Table.
Q: What do I do at communion?
A: For the 9:00 traditional service, you will proceed up the innermost aisle of your pew at
the instruction of the ushers. At the front of the sanctuary, you will be given the host,
and then you will proceed to the side where you will be offered wine or white grape
juice. You will then place your empty cup on the tray held by an usher and proceed
back to your seat up the side aisle.
For the 11:15 contemporary service and the 5:30 Saturday evening service (and rare
occasions at the 9:00 service) we use a process called intinction. You will follow the
same path described above, but you will be given the host to dip in the wine or white
grape juice. (Don’t worry, if you forget and eat your wafer before dipping, your
communion server will simply give you another.
Q: What if I have additional questions?
A: Feel free to email St. John’s secretary, Connie, at johnelca@aol.com, or to call the office at
(248) 474-0584. She will be able to direct you to the appropriate person to answer your questions.
