Luther on Music

Last Sunday, Olaf Lidums shared some thoughts on music and the importance of music in our lives and in our worship.

Martin Luther also had some thoughts on this. For example:

"We can mention only one point (which experience confirms), namely, that next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. No greater commendation than this can be found — at least not by us. After all, the gift of language combined with the gift of song was only given to man to let him know that he should praise God with both word and music, namely, by proclaiming [the Word of God] through music."

And my personal favorite:

"A person who does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God, must be a clodhopper indeed and does not deserve to be called a human being; he should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of asses and the grunting of hogs."

Wow! You tell 'em, Martin!

So, whether on the hymns or the sung liturgy, SING BOLDLY! Martin would approve!
